is generally accepted to-day that deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is an intrinsic part of genes and is able to store and transmit genetical information. The amount of DNA per chromosome complement is believed to be constant, and the DNA molecules have apparently no turn-over rate in the intermitotic cell [lo]. This constancy and stability of the DNA in somatic cells clearly supports the idea that all diploid cells of an organism contain the same number of genes. Recent data, however, raised some doubt in regard to the concept of “DNA constancy” and stability [3]. DNA is synthesized disproportionately in particular chromosome regions of the salivary glands of Diptera as shown by microphotometric measurements in visible light [‘LO] or ultraviolet light [ 161 and by autoradiographic studies using tritium labelled thymidine [9, 151. Small granules containing DNA are released from chromosomes in Cyclops [ 191, Tipula [ 11, Rana [ 131 and Lillium [ 181 without impairing the multiplication and differentiation of the particular tissues. These samples indicate that the amount of DNA is at least in several instances submitted to variations.
The present work is a quantitative study of the elimination of DNA which takes place during embryogenesis of Cyclops strenuus [19]. It is hoped that a profound knowledge of the behavior of DNA will contribute to a better understanding of the gene function.
